Upgrades - tuned by ear and instrument.
After perhaps 10 years of ownership, and still very much bitten by the HiFi bug, I was still looking for additional elements of sound that the Missions were not really providing me. In that time, my front end improved significantly with upgraded turntables, new arms, a new moving coil cartridge so the 765's were now feeling the pressure.
I loved them, but knew there were weaknesses.
1) The bass seemed overblown and whilst deep, was just "too much"
2) The midband seemed quite cluttered and clouded - my new ATOC9 cartridge had silky midrange but it was struggling to make itself heard.
3) The treble was not as smooth as I wanted.
So, I started looking for an upgrade to the Mission 765's. The search lasted years... I liked the basic sound, but needed a certain balance of superb power handling (for the music I liked) and fixes to the 2 issues above. One speakers did it.. the Acoustic Energy AE5's, but they were about £6k/ pr ! I did not have the money for these.
I then decided to upgrade them. So set about a program of careful upgrading. Working with Wilmslow Audio, (one of the UK's premier Hi-Fi loudspeaker rennovation / diy experts) the upgrades were carefully planned.
My thinking was that I didn't want to increase the cabinet too much so after consultation, a set of staged upgrades we planned.
First up, how to tame that bass. For details, see here
